Tucked away off the beaten path you’ll find a little deli and butcher shop with a big selection of European influenced meats. Arctic Meat & Sausage is located just East of the Mary Hill Bypass in Port Coquitlam. It’s not a visible storefront that you would happen upon while out running errands but rather a destination butcher shop that only those in the know frequent.
With the holidays, just around the corner if you are looking to stock up on items for entertaining you can put together quite the charcuterie spread without breaking the bank. The deli is stocked with an array of smoked meats, sausages and cold cuts as well as cheeses, condiments and sweets that would make your holiday menu the talk of the town. The variety of European influenced specialty items is paired nicely with some of the more traditional fare that you may want to pick up for your holiday table.
All of the meat products are made in-house with ingredients that are locally sourced where possible. Arctic Meat & Sausage offers monthly specials so that all of their customers can serve quality meats at a reasonable price point. In December, you can expect to see fresh turkeys (from JD Farms), ham, duck and European wieners featured on the specials board.
I was able to spend some time with Marco Jensch, one of the two German brothers behind the family run business that has been around for decades and spent the last 8 years in their Kebet Way location where they opened the deli side of this friendly neighborhood butcher shop about 5 years ago.
I’m not a huge meat eater myself and Marco spent the better part of our meeting trying to convince me otherwise after he schooled me in the difference between a sausage and a wiener. I had no idea that there were so many different types of wieners either- fresh seasoned pork, smoked to perfection and stuffed into a sheep casing sounds simple enough but there are so many recipe variations that give each one a unique flavor.
Marco did his job well and not only sold me on the European Wiener but also gave me some pointers how to cook it to perfection. I’m going to have to give him credit for opening my eyes and getting this incredibly particular palette to fall a little bit in love with meat again.
If you’re looking for some of the best meat in town at great prices you need to stop in to this hidden gem of a deli that is well stocked with mouth-watering items to take home for dinner or if you’ve been out holiday shopping and worked up an appetite you can grab a freshly prepared sandwich and a coffee to get you through the rest of your holiday preparations.
