We were very fortunate to be introduced to the Eastside Family Place recently and think that this fantastic community resource should be showcased and utilized by everyone in the Grandview-Woodland community that it has made its home for over 30 years.
Eastside Family Place is a support and resource centre for families with young children, from newborns to early age six. Located just off of Commercial Drive in East Vancouver, Eastside Family Place offers a variety of programs and services including:
- a family drop-in centre
- licensed occasional childcare
- parent education programs and workshops
- direct support and referrals for parents and caregivers
- food-security programs
- a variety of parenting resources
- birthday party rentals
All of these programs and services are offered at either no cost or very low cost to participants, the exception being the birthday party rentals, which are also very good value. The Eastside Family Place Society is a registered non-profit and charitable organization that has been assisting families for over 32 years, since 1979.
As a not for profit organization the Eastside Family Place relies on both government and non-government grants, donations and fundraising efforts to provide the various programs and services that they offer. The Eastside Family Place registered over 16,000 visits to the centre for the Drop-In program alone in 2009 and service approximately 4,400 individuals or 2,200 families in the neighborhood each year. Up to 70% of those families are single parent or low income.

REVIEW: Happy Feet TWO

The much anticipated follow up to the adorable original Happy Feet opened in theatres this past weekend. In Happy Feet Two Mumble and Gloria are all grown up with a family of their own and their cute and fuzzy new addition, Eric, is faced with the same challenges as his father Mumble was in the original story.

The message behind Happy Feet and Happy Feet Two is an excellent one that all kids should be taught early on. In the first movie we followed Mumble on his journey to find himself and grow into the talents he possessed even though the talents made him different. Happy Feet Two continues along the same line with Eric learning that it’s okay to be different and you have to have the courage to be an individual.

The original Happy Feet which has been on my Top 10 list since I first saw it is tough to out do. I can’t say that I would say the same about Happy Feet Two. The first film had more of a story to it and the latest installment appeared to be an attempt to re-create the same story by substituting one cute baby penguin with another. That’s not to say that this movie isn’t worth seeing and if you have kids I completely recommend it, just don’t expect to be wowed like you were the first time around!

The message behind the colorful moving pictures is fantastic even if it isn’t all that original. The movie is adorable and of course the returning all-star cast made up of the always entertaining Robin Williams, Elijah Wood,Common, Anthony LaPaglia and more makes the movie entertaining. The addition of Alecia Moore (Pink) to the cast to take the place of the late Brittany Murphy was awesome. Plus the newcomers Hank Azaria who plays the goofy little Puffin Sven and Brad Pitt and Matt Damon as a couple of crazy funny Krill makes the show light hearted and enjoyable from beginning to end!My favorite part has to be the soundtrack though, this movie has some great tunes from the past and as far as I’m concerned any show that finds a way to include Rick Astley, Janet Jackson and other gems from the 80′s and 90′s into the soundtrack is worth watching over and over again!

Happy Feet Two is now out for you to enjoy at most theatres and available in 3D. Go see it and be sure to check out the soundtrack now available in i-tunes!

REVIEW: Disney On Ice: Toy Story 3

We had the pleasure of attending the presentation of Disney on Ice: Toy Story 3 at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre  this past weekend and I can’t even tell you how GOOD it was! I have attended a lot of Ice shows and Disney on Ice presentations in the past and they have all been okay and kept me going back but this one has got to be the BEST SHOW I have attended in a while.

First of all I love going to events at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre because the crowds are much smaller, parking is not an issue, and the staff are always outstanding. I can’t say enough about the service that was received at every event I have attended there but this past weekend was outstanding.

From the security at the doors to the attendants assisting with the pay parking meters to the merchandise sales staff (they were good and, yes I spent FAR too much on Toy Story memorabilia!) there was not a single thing that I would have wanted done differently, this was service at it’s best.

The show itself was fantastic as well. Disney never disappoints but they certainly out did themselves with the Toy Story show. From the Toy Soldiers parachuting on to the ice to the always amusing Ham and Rex there was not a single detail left out. Following the Toy Story trilogy from Buzz and Woody’s adventure at Pizza Planet in the original movie to the introduction of the spunky and lovable Jessie in Toy Story 2 to Andy going off to college at the end of Toy Story 3 they managed to choose the best moments of all three movies and bring them to life on the ice.

For me Barbie and Ken stole the show with a re-enactment of the Dreamweaver scene that made me laugh out loud, but for the kids it was all about Buzz Lightyear and Woody. Of course the show would not be complete without an appearance by the adorable little three eyed aliens who worship “The Claw”. I would highly recommend seeing this show if you haven’t already!

Tickets are still available for this weeks run at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver November 23rd – 27th. Click here to find your tickets!
