Product Review & Giveaway: The Juppy Baby Walker

from The Juppy website

I was sent The Juppy Baby Walker to test recently and I have to admit I wasn’t sure what I was getting as I was opening up the package. Now before the Canadian parents in the group get up in arms, this is not one the ‘evil’    wheeled contraptions that were banned years ago in Canada. The best way to describe the Juppy walker is that it is to walking, what water wings are to swimming.  It is essentially a canvas version of the seat that you would find in one of those stationary jumpers with straps attached to the top. Baby goes in the seat part with legs out the leg hoes and the adult holds onto the straps to allow baby to practice and hone their walking skills.

Now I tend to grow chubby babies. By that I mean they are in the 99 percentile for everything from conception on it seems. So I was a little concerned that we wouldn’t get him in this thing (or back out if we did!) and that his legs wouldn’t fit through the legs holes. It turns out my concerns were groundless as I easily got him and his legs to fit! Of course take “easily” with a grain of salt. As we know, it isn’t ‘easy’ to get a baby to do anything from diaper changes to getting dressed. The makers of the Juppy walker did take pity on us parents however and placed a zipper up the back to assist us in getting those wriggly babies into it. You slip in on like a pair of pants, zip the back and are ready to go.

The Juppy fit my chubby baby like a glove, and was loose on my friend’s skinny little guy. But we found that once there was tension on the straps, the space and fit weren’t an issue. Both babies were quite secure, comfortable and pretty darn excited to try a few steps with their arms free.  And I was just as excited to try anything that would save my back from the hunched over posture we end up in when holding their little hands to help them walk. With the Juppy I was able to stand up straight which was great on my back and my balance. And I love that my son’s arms are free to help him balance himself and explore. It also alleviates the concerns of accidently hurting their joints if they twist or fall when you are holding their fingers, hands or arms.

My only issue with the walker is that I wish the straps had a little more play in the adjustability. While it was great for me at 5’1″, my husband would have appreciated a few more inches with his 6’3″ frame.

I really like the cute little carry bag that came with it. It folds up to about the size of a diaper making it super easy to ta

ke on the go. The straps stay nice and neat in the bag, and it just looks so adorable. And it is washable! This is huge as far as I am concerned because if I can’t wash it; I don’t want it!! And this washed up  great.

I think this would make a great baby gift as it is something most moms would not think to purchase for themselves. And you know you will be kindly thought upon months later when your dear friend isn’t throwing out her back thanks to your thoughtful gift.

Annual Passes You Must have!

Fall is my favorite time of year, it’s right up there with Summer, Winter and Spring! Yes I love every season for so many reasons but that’s another blog post!

Fall is fantastic for the colorful leaves, the blustery days (which I think I started to like thanks to Winnie the Pooh) and of course the pumpkins and Halloween festivities. It’s also the time of year that I tend to buy all of my annual passes for different attractions and thins to do around town. I’m not really a fan of all of my passes expiring at the same time but it really is the only way i can keep track of what is expiring and when! So every Fall in the month of October I evaluate which passes we used the most, which passes were a colossal waste of time and money and which passes we are must haves for the year to come. All of my annual passes are expiring in November and December so it’s time to figure out what we want to keep and what we don’t and consider some of the options we haven’t tried out yet.

Here are my top 5 MUST HAVE passes for the coming year:

1- The Greater Vancouver Zoo

We have been members at the Greater Vancouver Zoo since my son was born. It was a great place for our mommy group to meet and walk and it gave the babies something to look at as well. It is a membership that is renewed every year without hesitation and it grows with your child and your family. We love our Zoo pass and get a ton of use out of it. If you make it out to the Greater Vancouver Zoo just twice in the year you hve the membership it pays for itself. The pass includes the Train ride and Parking plus your admission. Pricing depends on the age of your kids (kids 2 & under are FREE) and the size of your family  but for a family of 4 to go to the Zoo for the day, park and go on the train it will cost in the neighborhood of $100.00 for ONE VISIT! Compare that to the Annual Family membership (for 2 Adults & 3 Children) which includes parking and train rides for everyone the $182.550 price tag for an entire year of visits to the Zoo plus a long list of other membership benefit that can be viewed here, an Annual Membership to the Greater Vancouver Zoo is well worth the money! The beauty of the membership is if you only have an hour to spend at the zoo it’s okay because you didn’t spend $100.00 to get in the gates!

2- Science World

Science World is an amazing place to spend the day, and you really can spend the entire day there! It is ever changing and offers so many things to see and do. The interactive displays will entertain for hours on end and the Kidspace area is one of my favorite places to spend an hour o two! One of the best things about Science Worlds Annual Memberships is that they offer both a “You & Me” pass plus a “Family” pass, there aren’t many places that recognize single parents so the benefit of being able to buy an annual pass without having to pay extra for additional people is a bonus! They also offer the option to purchase a 1 or 2 year pass and the ability to purchase and renew on-line. There is a long list of member benefits but the best ones i think are the members only events, advance Omnimax tickets and early openings on weekends and holidays for members only. We had the chance to attend the members only evening when Science World launched their Extreme Dinosaurs exhibit and it was really cool to be the first ones to see the display and to be ale to attend the event with smaller crowds.Like the Zoo membership if you are able to get out to Science World twice int he year that you hold the pass you will get more than your moneys worth. For a Family of 4 to go to Science World it will cost just over $80.00 and that is just to get in the front door, a Family Pass will run you $140 for the year and that gets 2 Adults and up to 4 children in the doors plus significantly reduced rates on the Omnimax shows and a slough of other membership benefits! The “You & Me” Pass is $90 for one year. I think the membership price is well worth it just to get into the Members Only events!

3- Vancouver Maritime Museum

The Vancouver Maritime Museum was an attraction I had heard a lot about but never really gave it a second thought until a friend of mine told me that they had been going to the Museum for months on a regular basis and spending hours there playing and discovering all things Maritime from the past, present and future! I have to admit I was skeptical even the first time we went to the Vancouver Maritime Museum when we first walked in I was less than impressed with the displays and was a little bit unsure how my friends could possibly have entertained their kids there for hours! They had the old RCMP ship the St. Roch open and available to explore but that really didn’t take up much time. We were at the museum for about 15 minutes and I was done, and disappointed until one of the lovely volunteers asked my son if he had been to the Children’s Discovery Centre yet. Discovery Centre??? My ears perked up and she pointed us down a long corridor lined with model ships and various shipping nostalgia. Once we were in the Children’s Discovery Centre my whole outlook changed! It was amazing! A wooden pirate ship complete with costumes and props for pretend play, an entire room of interactive displays and drawers full of materials to enjoy and learn from. It was amazing and we were actually there for hours. It was fun and entertaining and 100% worth the price of the admission. Kids under 5 are FREE so if you have young ones they will get in for FREE (maximum 2 kids for every paying adult) adults are $11.00 and a family will cost $30 for a single admission. If you sign on as a member you become a voting member of the Vancouver Maritime Museum Society, get FREE parking, and access to all of the great exhibits year round PLUS lots more. (View all the Membership Benefits here.) A single adult membership is $40 or a Family membership is $60. The membership will pay for itself in less than 2 visits and trust me once you experience the Vancouver Maritime Museum once you will be going back time and time again!

4- H.R. MacMillan Space Centre

I have fond memories of the HR MacMillan Space Centre going back to when I was a child and we visited the Planetarium on school field trips. It was one of my favorite times of the year, our annual class trip to the Planetarium. I still love going and especially enjoy discovering and learning right along side my future Astronaut. (He always wants to be an Astronaut after a visit to the Space Centre!) The annual pass to the Space Centre is a great companion to the Vancouver Maritime Museum Pass as they are right next door to each other and the Space Centre closes before the Maritime Museum, it makes a great day trip! The shows presented throughout the day in the Planetarium and the Multi Media Presentations and Demos in the Groundstation Canada Theatre will keep everyone entertained and mesmerized by the activity and make up of our Solar System. The Annual Pass to the HR MacMillan Space Centre will cost in the neighborhood of $90.00 for a Family and $60 for a 2-person pass, it includes discounts on Cosmic Space Camps, Birthday Parties and Museum of Vancouver admission, which is right int he same building so another perk! Children under 5 are FREE so you may be able to get away with an individual membership for  while at $35.00 for the year.

5- Capilano Suspension Bridge

The Capilano Suspension Bridge is an amazing mecca of outdoor wonders and BC history.  This has been a favorite attraction of mine since I was a kid when we used to take out of town visitors to see this amazing bridge across the canyon. It was a special occasion thing that we did as a family and usually only when we had out of town visitors. The park has grown and added so much to its list of attractions and reasons to visit including the newest addition Cliffwalk. I have yet to try it out but we adore the Treetops Adventure, the Story Centre, the guided tours and of course walking the Suspension Bridge. It’s nice to get outside and enjoy nature and the beauty of one of Vancouver’s most popular attractions. Kids under 6 are FREE and when you pay for your daily admission ticket its good for the entire year! $32.95 for an adult will give you access to the Suspension Bridge and all it has to offer for an entire year, PLUS access to special events and a slough of discounts while you’re visiting. There aren’t many annual memberships that can be obtained for under $40 for an entire year and this particular membership is one that every BC Resident should have!

I am a huge fan of several attractions all over BC and am guilty of buying the Annual Pass for almost every single one of them at one time or another, I can’t help myself! When I take the kids somewhere and they enjoy themselves and I leave happy and headache free I tend to want to go back as much as they do. I am an Annual Pass addict and am sure to have more than just the 5 listed above in my possession at any given time so here are a few of my runners up! Go out and enjoy the great things our city and Province has to offer and tell us what your favorite attraction is!  We’d love to hear from you!

Runners Up:

Vancouver Aquarium

Honey Bee Centre

Fort Langley Historic Site (they offer daily or seasonal passes)

Canadian Museum of Flight

Hells Gate Airtram (a bit of a drive but worth it!)

Power House at Stave Falls (a Seasonal Pass if well worth the money!)

I could go on forever! Be sure to check out our Attractions section in the Directory to find more things to do with the family and if they offer an annual pass, I probably have it already so let me know if you get one too and we can plan a meet-up!

Review and Giveaway: GOGO BAGS!

I received a 3 pack of Gogo Bags and I tell you I was excited to review them. I am a sucker for anything Eco, litterless lunch etc. I am the queen of those rather pricey plastic containers, so it wasn’t a stretch for me to use cloth bags for lunches as well. This company uses only 100% cotton for the outer shell and BPA free nylon for the inside. They are washer/ dryer safe! This is a biggie for me… if I can’t easily wash them then I don’t want them. And… ready for the drum roll…… they are MADE IN CANADA.

Let’s see Eco friendly, washable and made in Canada. What’s not to love!

I was sent a cutlery bag, a small snack bag and a large snack/ sandwich bag. I had my tests all planned out for all three to put them through the paces.

First up was the cutlery bag. In this bag the cutlery sits in the middle of the bag and is held in place with a piece of

thick elastic in the middle and can tuck into the flap at the top and bottom. The sides then fold over from each side and is held together with a piece of velcro on the top and bottom. My first test was to see what cutlery fit in it. My full size forks were too long, but the smaller forks, spoons and children’s cutlery fit easily. I found they especially worked well for the children’s cutlery which tends to be wider at the bottom. I then wanted to see how well the cutlery stayed in the pouch after banging around in a lunch kit. I discovered that the cutlery will fall out if a grown adult shakes it really, really hard numerous times. As I don’t intend to use the cutlery pouch during airplane turbulence, Playland rides or off-road 4x4ing, I think they will hold up in a kid’s lunch bag just fine. What I particularly liked is that it prevents the tines of the forks from going through the insulated part in the lunch bags. I have lost a number of lunch bags to sharp utensils, so there will be a bit of a power struggle as to who gets to use this piece in their lunch!

The snack bags are the same design in two different sizes. The pamphlet  claims you can carry sugar in it, so I dumped a 1/4 cup of sugar in the small one to see if it would hold. Well it did! Now I don’t imagine I would carry sugar in it, but it is certainly nice to know that crumbs won’t bleed through and get stuck between the inner and outer layers. The bags have a fold over flap that when folded back turns it into more of a pouch. Or in the case of the larger one, it also doubles as the sandwich holder. I can easily fold these over, but I wondered if my 4 yr old would have the manual dexterity to do the same. I handed him the bag at which time he actually commented that it was a pretty bag. Bonus! I let him try to open it on his own first but he didn’t quite figure it out. With one quick lesson (thumbs in the corner, fold over your finger) and he had it. Aimed with that bit of instruction he was able to use both bags himself at school the next day.

The final test was a peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich in the larger bag… cut into 4 pieces I might add and handed to my son. After he finished and the bag was sufficiently coated inside with a purple sticky mess, I pitched them in the wash. And they washed up fine. They are cotton, so either take them out of the dryer straightaway, or run an iron over hem if you are worried about wrinkles.

Where have all the Water Slides gone?

Summer has been taking a little bit longer to arrive this year but even with the unseasonably cooler temperatures we have been trying to plan a trip to as many of the Water Slide parks in BC as possible only to find out that a number of our favorite sliding destinations have been shut down. It was very sad to discover that the water slides I had spent many a summer sliding on as a kid in Victoria closed down after 25 long years in business and that wasn’t all, the slides in Kelowna and Penticton have also shut down! After shedding a tear or two over how short my list of sliding destinations had become I decided to ask a few of the experts “Where have all the water slides gone?”

The consensus seemed to be the high cost of running a park of this nature. Liability insurance rates are astronomical coupled with the need for sufficient staffing and the other side of that sword the difficulty in keeping sufficient quality staff on the payroll. There are so many factors that can be causing these watery wonderlands to close down so enjoy them while they are here because you never know when the taps will be turned off for good at another one of the water slide parks on our already short list.

With our BC options proving to be pretty slim pickins we’ve added a few out of province options just in case you want to make a weekend of it! Here’s hoping that summer arrives quickly now that you’re armed with a list of places to get wet!

Need a quick getaway?

We just enjoyed a relaxing week at the beautiful Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa in the picturesque and quiet little village of Harrison Hot Springs. This has been a long time favorite destination for me even before kids came into the picture. There is so much to do with or without little ones tagging along but I have to say the natural hot spring pools are a magical sleeping potion for incredibly active monkeys who somehow just wake up with endless amounts of energy!

Harrison Hot Springs has a number of boutique hotels and smaller accommodations to choose from but I prefer the Harrison Resort myself. They have great deals for the entire family to get away and enjoy all that Harrison Hot Springs and the surrounding area has to offer as well as a package if your in the mood for a little romance or want to escape with the girls.

Our top 10 favorite things to do in Harrison Hot Springs are:

1. Swim in the natural hot spring pools at the Harrison Resort

2. Go for a hike through the many trails around the resort

3. Spend some time out on the lake in the Bumper Boats

4. Head over to Killers Cove Marina and rent a Canoe or Kayak for a few hours

5. Take the kids to Tugboat Junction and play a round or two of mini golf

6.Spend a day at the nearby Bridal Falls Waterpark (passes included in one of the resorts packages!)

7. Order a picnic lunch from Miss Margaret’s Cafe (located in the Harrison Resort) and picnic at Sasquatch Provincial Park

8. Grab an ice cream cone from The Green Star Cafe and cycle around the village on a Quadricycle from Jamie’s Quadricycle

9. Build a sandcastle and fly our cool micro kite we found at Inkman’s Village Gifts

10. Stop in at the Kilby Historic Site for a tour and some great activities
