Welcome to the Peaceful Parenting Challenge Blog Carnival: Week #2- Mindful Breathing.
This post was written for inclusion in the 10 Week Peaceful Parenting Challenge Blog Carnival hosted by Prenatal to Parenting. This week our participants have written about creating awareness. We hope you enjoy this week’s posts and consider joining us next week when we share about a week of Practicing Mindfulness.
Breathing is a simple task, something that we all do everyday without even thinking about it. It’s an automatic reflex that is necessary for life and yet we take it for granted. No one really thinks about every breath they take throughout the day or night…we don’t tell ourselves constantly to breathe but after this week I have discovered that there is so much power wrapped up in a simple breath.
If you have a minute or two sit quietly and just breathe. think about each breathe and slowly you will become aware of what each breath can accomplish…I know I was surprised at the new found control ( I am kind of a control freak so it felt good!)
If you’re tired yet restless close your eyes and just breathe. Your mind will quiet down with each breath until you finally relax enough to rest peacefully.
If your frustrated with the child that will not stop talking and eat their dinner take a moment to breathe in and out until you feel it happen, the calming power of breathing. Your jaw will unclench, the tension in your shoulders will start to melt away and after a few minutes you might even feel the bubbling anger just below the surface fizzle out. After a few minutes of focussing on your breathing and possibly a short mental trip to your happy place ( mine includes palm trees and George Clooney) you will be ready to return to ground zero to once again battle the arch nemesis ( in my case dinner time!) with renewed patience.
I haven’t raised my voice at all this week but I did remember to breathe…a lot.
It works with parents,in-laws, friends, spouses, partners, co-workers and annoying neighbourhood children as well.
